“I have an idea,” I say.

“That’s what we’ve been waiting for,” Dad says.

Dad and Merrill are in his office. I’m in my truck driving. I’m on speaker phone.

“’Bout time,” Merrill says.

“May be nothin’, but . . .”

“Let’s hear it.”

“Y’all pulled Tracy’s phone records and mapped out where you think she drove that day based on them, right?”

“Yeah.”

“And searched those areas very thoroughly.”

“Right.”

“And came up with nothing.”

“True,” Dad says. “We also searched the areas where her car was spotted or her phone pinged in the weeks leading up to that day.”

“What about afterwards?” I ask.

“After that day?”

“Yeah,” I say. “In case she had hidden the body somewhere and went back and moved it.”

“We . . . No, we really didn’t do that exactly. We have her phone records but we didn’t map them out or follow up with searches, but . . . she was under . . . We were watching her pretty damn closely.”

“We know she got a burner during that time,” Merrill says.

Dad says, “But you’re right . . . we should follow up and check the locations—maybe even search them.”

“Consider it done,” Merrill says.

“That was a good idea,” Dad says.

“That wasn’t the one I called about.”

Merrill says, “Shee-it, you sayin’ that was just a bonus idea?”

“Did y’all pull Porsche Robinson’s phone records at the time?” I ask.

“I’m not sure,” Dad says. “I believe so. Seems like they contradicted her story, but they didn’t really line up with Tracy’s either.”

“That’s what I’m wondering,” I say. “What if instead of going with Tracy . . . Porsche was actually the one who took the body and buried it? Tracy would know that you’d search wherever she went, so she gets Porsche to do it while she drives away from the location to get us to look in the wrong places. I’m thinking we should search in the areas where Porsche’s phone pinged.”

“I’m on it,” Merrill says. “On both of them—this idea and the bonus one.”
